Ode to the New Yorker

Wake up,

get ready to start your day.

Take a shower and brush teeth,

so you don't smell.

Face full of makeup for hiding scars,

physical and emotional ones.

Pick out the perfect outfit,

not too slutty and not too conservative.

Eat the perfect breakfast,

but make sure you have a mint afterwards.

Don't forget anything for school,

or you're screwed.

Get on the bus,

don't sit in the front, back, or with anyone.

Arrive at school,

go straight to class.

No time to stop at the bathroom,

you never know who could walk in.

Put your head in a book,

people won't notice you.

Get your work done,

be a good student.

You get called on,

just say you don't know the answer.

Stop at your locker,

avoid getting pushed into it.

Go to the cafeteria for lunch,

eat by yourself to avoid any questions.

Survive gym class,

just hide in the back.

Avoid getting hit in the head,

no one would care if you did.

Bell rings,

get out of there fast.

Back on the bus,

same drill as before.

Run straight home,

don't stop to catch your breath.

You arrive at home,

the only place you can be you without being judged.
