Case File

First day of the new construction site to build another bank office. Workers piling in to start the day and getting ready to work. Machines start digging into the ground, making room for cement. It had rained the night before so dirt turned into mud. As the workers were preparing to pour in the cement, a man yells.

“Stop, stop, stop! There is a little girl down here and she’s dead! Someone call 911!”

Everyone started freaking out, several people were trying to call the police, sirens were getting closer and closer to the construction site. Policemen started getting out of the car, telling the workers to back up and started putting up caution tape. The coroner was rushing down to examine the body. The sky was starting to go dark, so everyone started working double time. The coroner loading the body into a car, cops scoping the scene and digging to make sure there aren’t any other remainings, but there were. The coroner had to put 4 more bodys into body bags, 2 boys and 2 girls. Rain started coming down slowly, but not slow enough for the police officers to finish their search. Workers were getting interviewed and some got to leave the site. Once the rain started coming down harder, the police and workers were heading to the station.

“The workers are going to be no use to us, let them go,” said Chief Jones, “we can call them back if we need them for further questioning but for now make them leave.”

“Yes Chief, sorry Chief.” Brady, a newbie, was always was afraid of Chief Jones.

It was all hands on deck at the station and everyone was trying to collect as much information as possibly.

“Drew?” asked Chief.

“Yes, Chief.”

“Go down to the coroner and get as much information on the victims. I wanna know names, ages, how long they have been in the ground, and cause of death. Just the important stuff. ”

“You got it Chief!”

Drew rushed to the elevator to go down the coroner’s office. As the elevator doors opened and Drew was about to step on, he ran into Jackie, another newbie detective but with a lot more guts.

“Oh, I’m so sorry Jackie!” he said, trying to help her up.

“It’s Jack.” She pushes his hand away and gets up on her own. When she finally gets herself together, she gives him a glare and walks to her desk without looking back. Drew watched her sit down and start working until Chief yells.

“Now Drew! Do you want me to make Brady do it?”

“No, I’m fine.”

Drew hops right on the elevator to go down. The only thing on his mind was Jack and how much it annoyed her to call her Jackie.

Drew got off the elevator and went straight into the coroner’s office. He knocked on the door but Diane, the coroner couldn’t hear him since she was blasting music. Drew just decided to walk in. Diane turned the music off.

“What can I help you with?” she asked.

“I need the reports on the bodies. Chief is impatient.”

“I haven’t started the autopsies yet, but I can give you name, age, TOD, and cause.”

“Perfect, let me get a piece of paper.” Drew started writing down what Diane was saying and taking in all of the information.

Drew came back upstairs and rushed to find the Chief to give him his notes.

“So, here is the names and the ages of the victims. All of them died from stab wounds to the stomach. The first little girl that was found, Kimberly King, apparently went missing in 1979 and no one ever found her until now. She was 12 years old when she was kidnapped and killed when she was 13, so she would of been...” Drew was counting on his fingers to figure out the math.

“51 years old.” shouted Chief

“Yes, the other victims are a little more recent. The 2 boys were brothers and went missing the summer of 2015 and the 2 other girls were apparently best friends and went missing around Christmas of 2016.”

“Anything else I need to know?” asked Chief.

“Oh, Diane got a parshall print off one of the bodies. It’s running through the database now.”

“Ok, good. Get Jack and Brady in here so I can fill them in. Once the fingerprint comes back, let me know.”

“Got it boss!”

Jack and Brady arrive into Chief Jones’s office a minute later.

“Yeah, boss? What do you need?” asked Jack.

“Brady, go ask Diane if she needs help with the bodies? Your science is going to come in handy.”

“O-Ok.” said Brady as he walked out of Chief’s office.

“Jack, call the victim’s families and tell them that we have their child. I know it’s not going to be easy but I think it would be better to come from you than Brady.”

“Ok.”

Drew came in, bumping into Jack again.

“Sorry Jackie.”

Jack whispered into Drew’s ear, “Call me Jackie one more time, there will be 6 dead bodies down there instead of 5.” Jack left the office.

“I got the fingerprint back, it belongs to Arthur Ream.”

“Great, to go his house and bring him in for questioning.”

“Chief, I can’t do that. He’s in jail for raping a 12 year old boy.”

“Ok, go to where he is being held and talk to him.”

“Ok.”

LATER ON AT THE STATE PRISON

Drew is sitting in the visitoring room in the state prison waiting for Arthur Ream. Drew knew that if Ream was guilty, it would be an open and shut case. The door opened, Ream walking in with handcuffs that were connected from the hands to the feet. Ream was a heavy set man, 65, old and gray. Drew opened up Ream’s file that was the size of a dictionary.

“25 years. How you liking it so far?”

No words from Ream.

“Well, it’s gonna get extended to a life sentence.”

Ream seemed to wake up, “What are you talking about?” He had a real deep, raspy voice.

“Well, a few construction works found some bodies of little kids where they are building a bank and apparently,” Drew took out a picture from the file, “you lived this old building. Is that right?”

“Yes, but I didn’t kill anybody.” Ream was trying to sell the innocent act but it wasn’t working very well.

Drew pulled out more pictures. He realized that he never looked at the pictures until now, “Ok, well tell that to the 3 girls and 2 boys that we found with your fingerprints on them. On the child’s necks, hands, legs. Most of the body, and you rape all of them, boys and girls.”

Ream started crying, he was a deep sober, “I’m sorry, I didn’t want to kill them but I didn’t have a choice.”

“No, you did have a choice! You should of never taken them in the first person!”

Drew knew he had what he needed to put him away for life, so he got up and walked out of the visitors room and dialed Chief Jones’s number.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Chief, it’s Drew. We got him.”

Drew sat in his car for a while, trying not to cry. He pulled out one of the pictures of the little girl’s. He started crying even more and kept on saying, “Oh, Sarah. Oh, Sarah.”
